Steven Donziger, the disbarred lawyer who once won an $8.6 billion judgment against Chevron Corp. over alleged contamination of the Amazon rain forest, was sentenced to six months in jail for defying court orders.

God Damnit. God fucking Damnit. Fuck Fuck Fuck this is disgusting, private prosecutions. didn't even give credit for time served. all for beating Chevron in an environmental case and appealing a preposterous court order. I knew cruelty was the point in this but fuck. Even if he actually did 6 counts of contempt of court 2 years and 8 months is more than can be legally given for that.

    Is six months the maximum, or is it six months for each of the six counts?

      I was going to say "Theoretically each conviction of contempt of court (which is a bullshit charge btw) can get you up to 3 months in prison, but Donziger has been under house arrest for 2 years and 2 months, so even if he was punished to the maximum extent of all 6 counts he should have been out with time served by now",

      looking it up, civil contempt of court in NYS can get you up to 6 months, but each sentence is served concurrently I guess. I still don't know how the judge can just ignore time served.
