Is Microsoft just tired of being an OS company? Or is there a secret cabal of Linux agitators with a hardon for assembly coding in the company?

The story I heard was that they skipped it because a lot of lazy programmers would tell their programs to look for "Windows 9" to see if it was Windows 95 or 98, and so it would have caused a lot of compatibility problems.
No I don't know what this means for 10/11
I think that's just the excuse they use. If executives wanted to call it windows 9, programmers would've found a way. My theory (that I havent thought about critically in years) is that they did it to make Windows 7 look outdated, convincing people to "upgrade" to a system supposedly 3 versions ahead
