Really great article about the situation for transgender people in China, really recommend everyone to read through it all. Here are some snippets

In May 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) removed gender dysphoria, or gender identity disorder, from the International Classification of Diseases. In China, however, being transgender is still classified as a mental illness, and transgender people require a “certificate of mental illness for gender dysphoria” before using hormones or getting sex reassignment surgery.

Every week, 10 to 20 transgender people visit Dr. Pan’s clinic. Counting the comprehensive consultations online, in five years, his team has provided medical help to more than 2,000 transgender people, ranging from teens to people in their 60s.

According to Dr. Pan, close to 80% of the transgender community require hormone treatment. And according to the 2017 Survey Report on the Survival of the Transgender Community in China, published by the Beijing LGBT Center and the Department of Sociology at Beijing University, 33% of transgender people who need hormone treatment obtain drugs through informal means.

Dr. Pan says there aren’t enough doctors willing to engage with the transgender community, which is still on the fringes of society in China. There are still some doctors who look down on transgender people and even the doctors engaged in helping the community. According to Dr. Pan, some doctors have questioned his motives, asking if he does it for the publicity it draws. The number of doctors in this field “can be counted on his fingers,” he says.

China still has a long way to go in this area, but it's a step in the right direction.

      from beijing lgbt center: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGeNO5S0Heg

vice has some : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuuXJ3ghxZw but take some of it with a grain of salt because they interview some wealthy hong kongers

there was one hosted on youtube that was in mandarin but i cant remember the title :\ it was very good, but the trans women basically describe conditions in america around 8-20 years ago, i had a lot of similar experiences to them here in the USA.

this is why trans people are all commies, our struggle is international :fifth-international:

What was changed in 2017 that made things easier?

And if China has the same rate of transgender people as the US, that would mean almost 7.5 million people currently without any real support system. That's a huge number...

yeah. but think about other countries ravaged by imperialism, too. africa will eventually go past chinas pop and theyll be doing an even more uphill battle due to imported religious bigotry

i always feel it strange when people talk about how much it must suck to be trans in china or something. ive been sitting here in america for over a decade and still havent gotten surgeries. its hell here too unless youre rich or youre lucky enough to have parents that take it seriously

I wasn't saying it's better or worse, just that 0.6% is a lot of people, and China's population is huge.

My main point is that if China does start pushing for trans rights the same way say Cuba is, that's 7.5 million people that can be liberated and serve as an example for the world.

The US is systemically just as bad or worse than China right now, even if there's more trans representation in media or whatever.
