People who think like everyone else thinks will generally produce average results in whatever field they concentrate on. Most neurodivergent people will never be rewarded by society for their perceived oddness, but a minority of them are positioned to do extraordinary things because heir differences happened to be valued and reinforced in their moments. These are the people who will inevitably be selected by the general populace to represent our group.

I used to think the romanticization of mental illness was a bullshit false correlation. But now I think the correlation is accurate, just deeply effected by survivorship bias. And also, there’s assumption baked into the whole “you have to be mentally ill to make good art” thing where the only way for your art to be good is for it to be some of the most popular in the entire goddamn world.
