If I were a cynical guy, I'd say that the inevitable controversy is a part of their marketing strategy. The comic comes out (no pun intended) in November, so they probably have a whole month of PR shit mapped out.
On the one hand yeah, it's a cynical move because "the market is right for it" but on the other like the article said it's good for people to be able to see themselves represented in popular media and the chud meltdowns are going to be amazing over this.
