My old clunker outback finally shit the bed for good this year. Bought a used car. Ended up buying a money sink. In the 4 months I've had it, this piece of shit has needed a total of $1400 in repairs already.

And now it broke down again today, wouldn't start. Was able to get a jump but now I'm wondering why the battery died in the first place and when it'll die again.

In the US most small auto parts shops will test batteries for free, but it might take some time.

Make some phone calls to local places, pull the battery and get a ride to one of them. Once the battery is figure out (its in good shape and can be stuck back in, or its burned out and has been replaced) put the battery back in the car and let it run in the driveway for 15 minutes or more. If the battery seems to have died again, its likely the alternator.
