Basically I've had enough of the algorithm(s) slowly monopolising my time, brain and social life.
- This week I resonated with recent episodes of Huberman Lab (37 and 39) and Trueanon (191).
- I've recently had my second jab and exited lockdown but life has only marginally improved, largely owing to an attention span befitting a gnat.
- I am not yet free of the 4+ hours of my day spent on anxiety inducing socials.
Time to excise this particular bundle of :brainworms:
Intending to just use SMS (via Signal) and email henceforth. Any other modalities of being you've enjoyed? I'll still visit this site, but perhaps less.
I'm also toying with the idea of writing physical letters to friends as a form of social journaling.
I quit front-facing social media years ago and no part of me misses it at all (fb, insta, snap, twitter). Still use this and reddit tho, and while anonymous social media still has issues too, it's way less toxic for your mental health imo.
Journaling and expressing gratitude are two very helpful ideas. If you keep up with it, at least once a day, I think it makes a sizable impact on one's quality of life.

High five comrade! I've deleted my instagram but haven't quite taken the plunge on deleting facebook. Following this thread to see people's opions. About the only reason I maintain facebook is its the primary chat app a lot of my friends use still.
Thanks! I had the same concerns re: primary chat app. Something in me has snapped tho haha.
I'm confident that the people who want/need to contact me will be able to. The people who don't may comprise an illusory, false social network, the only function of which is to keep eyes on screens (I still love them and will surely run into them irl).
So ends the age of fucking around, let the finding out commence.
You won't regret it - I did the same years ago and it's pretty damn nice.
is there any trick to deleting instagram? heard horror stories about people having terrible time getting rid of fb accounts where the menu options were increasingly hidden and/or not delete if you visited any link for two weeks
So you can actually delete your Facebook account but still use Messenger. Just download the Messenger Lite app and use messenger.com in your browser. That's what I've been doing for years.
Yeah, think about what activities provide the most meaningful experiences to you, and work towards replacing your social media usage with those. I'm still trying to do it myself
Mastodon is fun if you miss social media and want to avoid some of its downsides. I don't find much meaningful content on there though, so I prefer browsing here for that
