The transphobe purges early on were the best thing to happen to this site. It convinced me that the first thing you have to do in an inclusive leftist space is bait out the reactionaries and ban them mercilessly.

I'm still a bit amazed by some of the reactions to the pronoun tags and featuring pro-trans threads on the front page. I distinctly remember one person saying "oh i didn't downvote the trans rights megathread because i'm transphobic, i just...uhh...don't like featured posts! on principle!" and that reddit-brained shit is largely not present here anymore because we took out the trash.

Getting rid of downvotes was also really helpful. Now shitty people can't wage a silent campaign against a person or group.

I didn't like doing away with them at first but this place is so much better without them that I couldn't even go back to r*ddit if I wanted to.

Yep, if your engagement with a pro-trans post is indistinguishable from a transphobe's, you need to do some self-crit.

This is cool, thanks! Fun to read through the thread and recognize some of the usernames.

that was the last post I read on the sub. I couldn't figure out why my comments wouldn't go after a while. Then it hit me. This is some real nostalgia.
