Prove to us Queen Elizabeth II is alive, China urges UK

China has urged the UK to show proof that the monarch is alive, after the Chinese media reported on concerns that Queen Elizabeth II had died in her sleep.

The reports, which have circulated on social media for days, have prompted the British government to issue a rare statement on the "speculation".

Under Britain's unwritten constitution, if the monarch were to die, her successor would have to be formally proclaimed by parliament before ascending to the throne.

Some have speculated that her absence for several days from public view had left the government unable to carry out the necessary steps.

However, the UK's Press Association news agency reported on Sunday that Buckingham Palace had confirmed Queen Elizabeth was "fine" and had carried out her normal engagements on the previous day.

The palace did not confirm when the Queen last appeared in public or when she would next be seen.

In a statement on its website, China's foreign ministry said it was concerned about the reports and asked the UK to provide an explanation.

"If the queen has passed away, the British government and royal family should not keep the news from the public," the foreign ministry said.

"The UK is obliged to tell China if the queen passes away, so that China can send officials to pay respects to the deceased."

The queen has slowed down her work schedule considerably in recent years.

But the fact that she has not been seen in public for several days has fuelled speculation that she may be unwell.

Queen Elizabeth is well known among the Chinese public, in part due to her state visits to the country in 1986 and 2005.
