    addiction to porn

Were the Mormons in Utah right to declare porn a public health crisis?

EDIT: A link for you in case you wanted a look

EDIT2: Sorry if this is coming off as aggressive. I am not trying to trap you or anything. I just like using this question as a gauge on where to work from when talking to people about this.

Not the OP but the "crisis" language is a bit alarmist for me. Porn addiction is one expression of an entire category of psychological addictions (that is, addictions that don't have a chemical basis), and the way to combat it at a societal level is basically the same as combatting the rest of them - free therapy and counseling for all effected, improve people's material conditions so that they have more resistance to addictive behaviors, destigmatize it so that people can talk about it more frankly and openly.

So its not about porn its the fact the person has an addictive personality? My issue with all this talk is trying to figure out who is anti-sex-worker and who is not.

Not an addictive personality either, no, though neurotypes and stuff can play into susceptibility. It’s more that we live in such an absurdly horrendous kind of hellworld that people reflexively turn to shit to numb the pain, and porn is one of those things. At least, that’s what I’ve gotten from what people have said

no, Utah republicans are likely doing that because they want to ban porn, which I don't support because that would ultimately hurt sex workers more than anyone. besides I don't think pornography is inherently bad, even if a lot of it is bad and the industry in which most of it is produced is exploitative (but so is every other capitalist industry). banning porn would of course not eliminate it but drive it underground, where it would be unregulated and get mixed up with some truly reprehensible things.

frankly when I talk about porn addiction it's somewhat personal because I myself am addicted to porn. but I don't hate it or want it banned because of that. like a lot of people who are susceptible to porn addiction I'm incredibly alienated and isolated, so I think the key here is to create a less atomized society.

My sister who is ex-mormon like me, thinks that porn kills families still and will sight studies that Mormons commissioned to say porn is bad for the brain in general. You are talking about addiction which is totally different to me. As always I tell people I am an autistic person that loves things in neat categorized boxes in my head. So when someone says porn addiction it just makes a list fly through my mind on if this person means the industry is bad, the addiction factor is bad, or the fact that people even do it is bad.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on the topic. I really enjoy reading what people think about it and I hope one day you can find a way to beat your addiction. For me I am mainly addicted to THC and really cannot shake the problem. I spend so much money a month on it that i almost cannot pay my bills. In that fact we have some solidarity in our fight against our inner demons.

I struggle with the same exact things and often with the same exact subject.

In my opinion, it’s basically that the porn industry is bad because it’s misogynistic (and that the current form of dominant pornography seriously incentivizes social media like constant consumption)
