Two women came to my house telling me fire's going to rain down on us very soon- and it's been obvious since pandemic. They're trying to save me. I asked for their pamphlet (thinking it would get them to leave quicker) but they only gave it asking if I promised I wouldn't throw it away (I then committed the sin of lying). Afterwards I was annoyed I didn't tell them there's been 2+ pretty big pandemics since Christianity's existed, but it would probably be fruitless even then. I understand they're trying to save people from hell, but just in the big scheme of things, preparing for the apocalypse rather than helping people in the now is deeply annoying and counterproductive. Any words on how to talk to the doomsayers?

I understand they’re trying to save people from hell, but just in the big scheme of things, preparing for the apocalypse rather than helping people in the now is deeply annoying and counterproductive.

I mean, you're already most of the way to understanding. They believe that you are facing imminent death. They believe that this outcome will also doom you to eternal torment. If you believed these things, I hope you wouldn't be trying to fix "petty" things like world hunger or capitalism or whatever. You should be doing anything and everything you believe will result in the fewest possible people being doomed in this way.

The problem is not with the two people you talked to, it is with whoever told them that the world is about to end.

Jehovah's witnesses hang around a lot of street corners in the city centre close to where I'm studying.

They used to stop me a lot which pissed me off because I'd be heading to lectures and didn't want to be stopped by some cultist trying to convert me.

Proudly wearing a shirt with #team cock emblazoned on it seems to have dissuaded them.
