On this day in 2008, the worst Greek riots in decades began after Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student, was killed by police in central Athens.

The killing of the young student resulted in large protests within an hour of the shooting, which later escalated to widespread rioting, with numerous participants damaging property and engaging riot police with Molotov cocktails. The demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities and lasted for several weeks, into January of 2009.

The protests went beyond the scope of just police brutality - on December 10th, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (ΓΣΕΕ) and the Civil Servants' Confederation (ΑΔΕΔΥ), together representing 2.5 million people, half of the total Greek workforce, called a one-day general strike in opposition to the government's economic policies.

While the unrest was triggered by the shooting incident, commentators described the reactions as expressing deeper causes as well, especially a widespread feeling of frustration in the younger generation about specific economic problems of the country (partly as a result of the global economic crisis), a rising unemployment rate among the young generation and a perception of general inefficiency and corruption in Greek state institutions.

this event would give rise to the Anti-austerity movement in Greece in 2010

Getting very frustrated with local organizing lately.

The group I'm in stopped organizing when COVID hit (vulnerable people with health issues), and now is slipping into a desire to drop out and start a commune somewhere, which feels like giving up to me.

I've been a wobbly for a few years now and it's been a real struggle getting our local branch off the ground (it closed down some years ago and was restarted recently), and I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels there.

PSL never got back to me after I applied.

I have a comrade in CPUSA but I'm hesitant to join because they're not really active locally and I'm wary of it being all feds.

IMT does a lot of tabling, but, AFAIK, is just doing the normal Trot stuff.

Feeling very directionless lately, and I just want a DemCent group that will call me a lib and make me read :soviet-bottom:

:fidel-salute-big: for fighting the hard fight comrade. It's hard in the imperial core, but dismantling this war machine is one of the most important jobs for communism worldwide.

Organization is essential and good but if that isn't an option then you gotta make it one. Print flyers and pamphlets and leave em on busses and store shelves or whatever. Also read stuff, lib.
