Rock and stone to the bone, but there's not really a story.

        Not with that attitude.

The scout is a young go-getter from another local with big dreams. His dad was a miner, his granddad was a miner, and he's torn between wanting to prove himself in the family trade and wanting to follow his real passion as an artist. The frustration leads to him taking unecessary risks at work, vaulting across cave ceilings because that thrill is the only outlet he has.

The driller's a simple man. He does it job and does it well, and is satisfied with the life that his job lets him live: good pay, great beer, lots of vacation time and a company pension. He has a wife and teenage child out there somewhere and he loves them dearly, but honestly he's not too shaken up when long jobs keep him away from home for a few weeks at a time.

The engineer is a jaded grad student who used to want to work on scientific expeditions before his financial aid dried up and he ran out of grant funds. He keeps telling himself he's only doing this for a couple years so he can save up money to finish his doctorate, but he's a creature of habit at heart. The job's steady and he enjoys it sometimes, despite himself, and if he just ends up staying there 30 years - well, there are worse fates to suffer.

The gunner's seen it all and he wants you to know about it. Nothing scares him; so much as makes him twitch. Giant alien spider swarm? Bah, quit whining, that's just Tuesday. But sometimes, when he's in the thick of it, he can't help but think that maybe this is the day. The day his trigger finger was slow, his chamber jammed at just the wrong moment, the cave floor collapsed under him. He feels the fear, and he hates himself for it. He's the gunner. He is his team's anchor. He cannot show fear. He will not show fear.

Honestly I only play for about an hour a night as it is. The days of playing Diablo 2 for 18 hours straight are long gone for me. So, it's okay to play a little bit and then put it down.

That's true, but I meant that they probably wouldn't be interested at all in the long term due to the lack of linearity

There aren't any co op shooters with a linear story line these days. Maybe the new Halo, but the looter shooters sort of blew up the whole linear experience. I dunno, maybe try borderlands 2

I think most of the Halo games have story coop, though if they're fun or not is up for debate.

A friend of mine bought the re-release collection of them for me so we could play together, though we haven't yet because we've been playing minecraft instead.

Halo would probably be highly dependent on the audience. But the campaign included coop from the jump and blended survival horror with a sci fi fps in a novel way. Definitely belongs on the list.

    Borderlands!

They have diablo like "crpg" characteristics as well but this describes the borderlands games to a tee.

gears of war 2 but unironically, i heard 3-5 are fun too but i haven't played them

the first game is passable (never beat it) but the second game really embraces how dumb it is and makes for a fun and schlocky action movie romp with some hilariously cheesy dialogue

Kind of amazing how few games there are in this genre. Mostly because most story games are single player. I don't think I have a single co-op story-shooter game other than Borderlands 2/3. The LEGO games all have story co-op but they're not really shooters, and they're pretty simple and patience-testy, and I don't think they have online co-op. The Star Wars one coming out soon might be good. Borderlands 3 is okay but the story isn't very good and the games are mostly just running around a big empty map. Borderlands 2 has a better story but the graphics are already extremely dated. Warframe has "story" coop in that the game has some "story" stuff in it if you're able to grind that far. But it's mostly a grindfest game that exists for grind. Guess there's also Portal 2 co-op, and Left 4 Dead 2.

Resident Evil series? RE5, RE6, RE2:Revalations are all excellent co-op zombie 3rd person shooter with classic Capcom goofiness, camp, cheese, but still with a modicum of wholesomeness.

There’s probably very few because playing anything with a friend runs kind of opposite to sitting quietly paying attention to the story

In my experience this is boring... The point of stories is to talk about and interact with them publicly with other people, not just silently nod along with what's happening. Because of this I find story based games with others to be extremely fun, but nobody caters to this :(

Like watching a movie with friends but with more direct interaction
