The number one way to make anyone think you're intelligent is to say things that they agree with in a confident manner. And then they're all like "wow you're so smart".
Reddit circlejerks excel at both parts here.
I see all them $5 words and think wow this person must live in a city.
Reddit has investigated itself and found Reddit users to be very intelligent.
"Why does everyone where I post have such huge dicks and are so good at sex?"

Being "intelligent" isn't that big a deal. Intelligence is something like normally distributed, so there are millions and millions of intelligent people around. They shouldn't be deferred to, they're not special.
