Squidward is a more sympathetic character than SpongeBob, I think.
He just wants to make art and perfect his craft but in order to pay the bills he works a low wage, dead end job under a small business tyrant. He desperately tries to spend his spare time struggling to fullfil his dreams but never gets any peace from his neighbours.
Squidward is quite clearly depressed and I can't help but think of how octopi commit self harm when trapped in fish tanks. Suffice to say he's not the happiest bloke, worse still is that his gloomy demeanor seems to make him the target of others (as someone who struggled with depression and even suicidal ideation myself, I am keenly aware of how some folks will demand you "just cheer up").
Plus he's a union man unlike, that scab SpongeBob.
