They wouldn't wait to tell Israel to cease a genocide until halfway through a Friday, but the advance notice gives police time to prepare for protests

Ding ding ding! Not that SA didn't make a great case, but if any of you actually hoped that a western institution like the ICJ would actually find Israel guilty of anything but 'self-defence'...

Lets see what happens. Ukraine's case at the moment has not come to decision, but they told Russia to "immediately suspend the military operations" in Ukraine, while waiting for the final decision on the case.

Considering the death toll difference I think the ICJ will be forced to at least advise Israel to suspend military operations. If they don't they'll reveal themselves as unrepentant western dogs.

There are two potential outcomes here.

1: ICJ makes a preliminary ruling that Israel must cease its genocidal activities while the case gets a full hearing. Ultimately, the UN Security Council is responsible for enforcement, where the US holds veto power. The preliminary ruling, along with any final verdict years down the line will lack meaningful enforcement, demonstrating the uselessness of the institution.

2: ICJ makes a preliminary ruling in Israel's favor, demonstrating the uselessness of the institution.

Palestinian liberation will only come through direct action. Armed struggle. But it doesn't hurt for the impotence of these institutions to be put on display, and regardless of outcomes, the exercise of arguing the case is important.

1 is the better outcome because it allows the global south to argue that the US is not the world's enforcer of the rules based international order and it hastens multipolarity.

imo this ruling is only good for not giving liberals anywhere to hide, rhetorically, and giving cover to people in liberal institutions to more openly call out israel. I hope it leads to more than that but not optimistic.

I'm going to wait and see. The majority report had a lawyer on who did the case for the Serbian genocide and he was optimistic, so I'm willing to suspend disbelief and say they'll rule against Israel.

It won't change anything, but they will rule correctly

The ICJ has ruled against the U.S. in the past, so the correct decision here isn't totally out of the question.

That surprises me. Don't these cases normally take like 20 years to come to a decision?

it's not a criminal case yet. this is the pre-trial where they're just determining whether South Africa's case has merits and whether any injunctions need to be issued. the criminal case will take years. the hope is that they find the case to have merit and order Israel to cease military operations in Gaza until the end of the criminal case at the ICC.

Ah, that makes sense, coolio. Though I guess it's still likely Israel won't abide by any such order.

yeah definitely not. and the US can threaten to invade the Hague even if ICC charges are brought. so it's very much cool-zone
