it could just be the internet exposing stupidity that was always there, but there's also the possibility that we genuinely are all getting progressively more brain damaged from the various poisons capitalists dump everywhere - we already know about the effects of leaded gasoline, there's ongoing study about the cognitive effects of air pollution, there's microplastics everywhere and who knows what they're doing to us, it's potentially pretty grim.
It was always like this imo it is just the internet means someone can write a story about their dog farting and get 100k people to read it. You couldn't do that in the 50s because the only people that would listen to shit like this would be the half a dozen people in your family/friend circle and half of them would call you a moron for it.
