She has been aiming to represent China in the 2022 Olympics since 2019. I doubt money is the reason.
People keep pointing out that she and her mother or grandmother were victims of racist harassment in the US. That sound like a more likely reason.
Yep. This is what I’d assume is the biggest reason. This article came out last year but the anti-Asian/Chinese racism was going up well before that of course. I also think it’s true she’s probably getting better treatment from the Chinese government and Chinese companies. Another thing that might be a factor is that she’s probably also much less likely to encounter extreme exploitation and/or creepy shit as a very young fashion model in China than she would in the US.
I like the image of crapitalists getting mad at their young talents being bought away from them.
Yeah, it might just be a reference to the fact that it's an old song and maybe she's not familiar with it, but who knows. Now that the alternate meaning was pointed out, though, I'm questioning my original interpretation. After all, there is precedent for people in the media openly saying stuff like that about young Asian Olympic athletes. (CW: radio host making disgusting sexual comments about an underaged girl)
His whole "joke" was pretty shitty, regardless.
