Definitely would not use this for drinking water but simple enough design to be useful
Easy enough to test if its safe to drink. You can get lead testing its and similar. The water filters they use in disaster relief are basically this anyway.
How effective is terra cotta as a filter? My ideal standard is a biochar filter but I know it's more complex to make and needs to be replaced
Its pretty good, but the clay needs to be reasonably thick. As I infererd earlier you can test the water for chemicals and stuff. If you were to use them for drinking water testing would be a prudent thing to do.
