    I didn't think this was going to happen because I didn't think Putin had any realistic interest in conquering Ukraine. I had assumed it was all posturing for a lower fee on the pipeline and concessions from the west. Considering how quickly they started targeting military targets in the west, I think the "interest" is to show the west what Russia's modern military is capable of, which is even more cynical than I imagined.

      Same. I suppose reflexive anti-State Department-ism, despite how well it's worked for me in the past, isn't foolproof

      I think the issue was that the west didn't offer any concessions. From what I hear Puti wanted strongb guarantees against NATO expansion and the west said no way.

      I saw a press conference from putin a little while back, and he seemed dead serious about viewing nato expansion into ukraine as a threat to russia that he wasn't going to tolerate. It made me worried, especially 'cause our diplomats were basically like "o rly? enjoy your sanctions, lol"
