It seems pretty clear that this thing is here to stay, and the few remaining zero covid countries are gradually loosening restrictions. I’m getting very doomer sitting here realizing this thing is probably not going to ever going away. So how are you adapting to the new reality and living with covid while trying to stay healthy?

I hate that :grillman: habit so much. I've seen it defended online as "bills can be sticky sometimes" but no, it's bullshit. I can divide sticky bills without some TV-trained pretentious and unhygenic gesture.

TV trained? You mean they only do it because they saw actors doing it on a show?

I highly doubt it emerged from the ether fully formed across the western world, especially because it is 90% done by older Xers and Boomers when I see it.

I believe it is a performative gesture that, yes, they picked up from people on TV decades ago.

I used to spit habitually when playing baseball because I saw professionals do it, not understanding as a child that it was because they were packing a lip of tobacco. So yeah, I could see these people developing a weird quirk because the guy from gunsmoke counted his dollar bills that way or something equally dumb

That's exactly how I see it, too.

I mean, we're not immune to performative actions that we see done by other people, on screens or otherwise. I just find the money gesture both gross and pretentious and I hate it every time I see it.

My best friend as a child spit all the time too as he was a baseball fan and I think I developed the habit for a little bit

and they only dab on their tongue for a split second. The inside of your mouth has a five second rule.

It doesn't count as a gross unhygenic licking of fingertips applied to a dirty piece of highly-circulated paper if it's just a quick lick. :think-about-it:
