I have always like the idea of miniatures and figurines, but the funko pop seems so utterly devoid of character. There are tons of rad figures and miniatures for about the slightly more cost of a Funko Pop that don't look like an algorithm driven 3D printed mold. The Pops seem so plainly mass manufactured and lack any sort of dynamism or artistic merit. They all look exactly the same, regardless of the nature of the media they are meant to represent. Funko Pops seem like convince store quality, but for some reason they are seen as “premium” products. I would respect a nerd infinitely more if they had a collection of busted looking handmade models, or poorly painted ones, or anything else that intersects nerd shit and craft. These little copy & paste, plastic blobs seem to lack any of the charm or richness of the things they are derived from. They all have the same black void eyes that a pretty creepy to be honest.
Yeah, if I had the disposable income and shelf space, I could see myself buying a couple of nerd collectibles because I'm a loser, but like, they'd have to look nice.
Another aspect of the Funko craze that I do not understand at all is the whole hoarding thing- why would you want dozens of these things? You can't possibly like all these franchises that much
I think it might be for reselling purposes, when they eventually have collectible value after many years - after all, under capitalism you can't just buy things because you think they cool, everything has to be an investment opportunity
