Sad but understandable given the media blitz that was unleashed on Russia. This is still another step in turning the internet into a series of walled gardens.
It was already a walled garden, albeit one controlled entirely by the US security complex, and with a gate open for anyone else to visit.
In a sense, we’re moving towards a federated model of the internet, albeit between states. The states will choose which others to federate with, and to what extent.
I think having sovereign social media isn't necessarily just "walled gardens". People like to talk about how great the "early internet" was with lots of little social spaces and web pages. What makes having multiple social media outlets different? With Twitter and Facebook dictating what people are and aren't allowed to say and how people interact (controlled by the US government), having more online spaces is better, and it means more and more regular people will be knowledgeable about different platforms existing, since they won't be able to rely on just one website providing everything.

Wonder how long it will be before the Domain Name System splits up with different root servers and authorities.
