If what I wrote made any sort of sense, I'd recommend Heart of Europe: A History of the Holy Roman Empire , by Peter H. Wilson. It can be pretty convoluted at times though, as he doesn't keep the topics he's covering chronological. It's also very dense, so if you're not acclimatized to that sort of reading, then it might not be for you.
