"Listen, Jack -- Russia didn't invade Ukraine. That's a misleading set of photographs published by Radio Free Europe. The pictures of dead bodies are from the day after the protest, when the Russian army fought off a cell of violent separatist rebels who got their weapons and training from the CIA. The actual protesters had already left the area before the tanks rolled in and, you know, the thing."

Who can forget that iconic video of a Russian tank convoy stopping in front of a civilian protester on the street, backing up, and trying to drive around him? Or how the Ukrainian civilian climbed up onto the tank and began having a conversation with the driver?

Then there were the Russian soldiers mingling with Ukrainian anti-war demonstrators and singing pro-democracy chants? And the Ukrainians who raised a statue dedicated to democracy in a matter of days, to face down a giant image of Vladmir Putin hanging in Kyiv?

God damn I don't think anyone could have predicted how crazy that whole affair was.

(Incidentally, this CNN image collection from 1989 was pretty interesting and a useful counterpoint to a lot of the modern day anti-China bullshit simply because it is so dated)
