Can anyone think of any anime shows/movies that have real world political messages? The only anime I can think that have political messages do it through allegory or subtext. Like Patlabor has kinda socialist themes. LoGH is extremely liberal "boths sides." Monster criticizes criminal justice systems kinda. A whole bunch of anime brings up the atom bombs, like Akira and Grave of the Fireflies.
Most mecha shows are anti-war. The only show I can think that has real life political stuff is that one where Junichiro Koizumi plays mahjong against like George Bush and Hitler on the moon.
There's that Gate show. A portal to a fantasy world opens up and the JSDF colonizes it and it's portrayed as cool and good and theres the 900 year old child waifu shit and everything. The whole thing is a rabidly reactionary commercial for the JSDF it's kind of amazing in a horrible way
oh yeah, I do recognize that one. That show doesn't even hide how bloodthirsty it is.
I also just remembered Joker Game, a show about Japanese spies in 1937 that only kinda sorta mentions Japan was allied with Nazis and instead tries to be "oh wow cool spies and cool Japanese army stuff." Also horrifyingly reactionary
I'm starting to get the feeling anime doesn't do real world political stuff much because it will just express the dominant conservative attitudes of Japan itself

Concrete Revolutio was cool, had some very direct references to American imperalism in post-war Japan iirc.
