Nope, in 64 characters only unlocked by doing the specific challenges. They started doing match numbers with Melee and made it easier and easier in each entry since. And Ultimate got rid of specific challenges, the closest thing is "beat Classic as a certain start character to get the next in their unlock list", e.g. for Mario it's Sonic->Bayonetta->Little Mac->Ike->Luigi->Roy->Dr. Mario->Olimar. And Classic matches counted towards the match based unlocks so you end up getting those too.
I miss having to complete specific missions to unlock characters.
