Neoliberalism has permanently damaged the party systems of places like Germany and the UK. Lindner's party, the FDP, used to be classic liberals (in some cases in the actual sense of the word, in some cases in the sense of "dog whistle for cryptofascist") and still call themselves liberals, but have mostly presented as a "communism is when the government does stuff" kind of party.
