The Trump-backed candidate J.D. Vance won the Ohio Republican Senate primary on Tuesday, while former Bernie Sanders presidential campaign co-chair Nina Turner lost the Democratic primary election for Ohio’s 11th Congressional District after massive outside spending and attacks by super PACs. We speak with Andrew Perez of The Lever about what Ohio’s elections mean for the future of the Democratic Party if it actively suppresses candidates like Turner who are critical of the establishment. Given that a majority Democratic Congress and sitting Democratic president have not delivered on campaign promises such as canceling student debt, protecting Roe v. Wade and passing Build Back Better, the party will be in jeopardy in the upcoming elections, says Perez.

Wait she lost again? Didn’t she just lose like recently? If she keeps losing at this rate she’s gonna secure a cabinet position in the next white house. Also if you knew the democratic party was out for you why run as a democrat ???

    yes, but...

    if we can critically support Russia more or less on the sole basis of opposing and irritating America, it seems like we could do the same for people like Nina Turner, no?

    Also, regardless of her own true beliefs, if it counters the perception that "democrats don't need the left", it seems like that would be a good thing.

    The "squad" (I fuckin hate that name so much) still represent a step forward for leftism in this godforsaken country.

        not in that dimension. but I think unlike other democrats, they do actually shift the Overton Window, which matters in the big picture.

        so I don't think their value is in harm reduction or policy or anything to do with electoralism, per se.

        But we need to make progress on a lot of different fronts to achieve leftism in this country and I believe that the public mainstreaming of more left-leaning language and ideology, even if they are grifters who don't believe it, represents a net positive after accounting for the bad stuff. which is precisely the sort of thing the term "critical support" exists to describe.
