The Soviet Union legalized abortion in 1920, thanks to the efforts of Alexandra Kollontai and the Zhenotdel (special women’s section within the Central Committee of the Communist Party)

Unfortunately it was made illegal once again in 1936, then re-legalized as part of Destalinization in 1955. In that time, Catalonia was the only place to fully legalize abortion (in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy), with Poland, Iceland and Sweden allowing it in limited circumstances.

Meaning that the Soviet Union was the first and second modern country to fully legalize abortions.

One of the mistakes of the 30’s, like outlawing homosexuality. Gotta purge rightists early and often.

You've got to love the reasoning behind that: If we just outlaw homosexuality then the gays will marry women and have children instead of doing gay stuff.
