I actually found this on r/Anarcho_Capitalism, where they were talking about how Assad didn't do the chemical attacks. Quite strange, honestly.
I'm not sure why this would be surprising to anyone, Ukraine was notoriously gutted post USSR split, one of the poorest countries in the region, and, Syria had relatively a lot of industry, oil, etc. The US GDP per capita being around 50,000 that year for reference, I would look up the average/median for 2010 too, but I would need a spreadsheet or something bc google is impossible to find things on now.

Wait if Russia is really genociding Ukrainians, then why is their GDP the same as before?
I'd generally steer clear from arguments like this. Genocide doesn't require success.

Anyways, didn't Syria had to do the post-soviet market reforms to get to that higher gdp per capita...
