some people saying it's also possible they're diluting the gas, unsure of the plausibility of that or if it would cause it not to smell. But I was at the gas station yesterday I was able to smell the gas.

    That's true for natural gas, but gasoline isn't odorized. Most of it's smell comes from a mix of different volatile organics in it like xylene, different cycloalkenes, and historically benzene
