Britain’s legal system was Common Law, which the USA inherited and copied from them. Common Law gives massive power to judiciaries.

common law, also known as judicial precedent, judge-made law, or case law, is the body of law created by judges and similar quasi-judicial tribunals by virtue of being stated in written opinions. The defining characteristic of “common law” is that it arises as precedent

The French instead used Civil Law, especially under Napoleon. Civil Law gives more power to legislatures and restricts the ability of judges to make decisions and precedent.

Civil law is a legal system originating in mainland Europe and adopted in much of the world. The civil law system is intellectualized within the framework of Roman law, and with core principles codified into a referable system, which serves as the primary source of law

We sometimes ironically stan Napoleon because he was anti-Anglo and attacked Britain quite often

In common law, judges strip your rights based off of what this guy said 100 years ago which was based off of what this other country's judge said 400 years ago about witches. None of that BS precedent stuff in civil law.
