Whenever characters start singing out of nowhere it just makes me cringe

    Because they’re good. Musicals from MGM’s golden years are peak musical. Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis, Strike Up The Band, Babes in Arms, etc. basically the majority of Judy Garland’s filmography. That’s not even counting others like 42nd street.

    There’s a real charm to them and a somewhat nostalgic feel.

    Idk are modern musicals shit now? Wouldn’t surprise me if American musicals were also going the way of American films lately.
