Citations Needed did a "Florida Man" episode and the tldr is that you hear all these stories out of Florida because mental health care is basically nonexistent in the state and sunshine laws allow easy access to stories involving law enforcement.

All those stories basically boil down to "this person is experiencing a mental health episode and/or homelessness in an area with very little support for either."
