It weirds me out how people are okay with being monitored by corporations.
This same journalist has a bunch of "China no privacy" articles to her name too. But a Japanese company leaks everyones tax number and it's just a silly mistake, oh well.
Everybody in Japan goes on benders, many on a daily basis. Alchohol is the only socially acceptable avenue to be genuine/vulnerable in public, and bars/izakayas are the social substitute for mental healthcare
I left a laptop at a bar with ~1% of the week priors internet traffic metadata. With that data, Saudi princes could have rounded up non-straight people to execute them, it could have been used to find infidelity of partners, squash political dissent, or maybe use the information to do much worse in the future (I'm looking at you, the United States for using census data to round up Japanese people for internment camps).
I managed to retrieve the laptop, gave her a $50 tip, and quit my job about a month after due to moral reasons.
