it spreads like smallpox basically and cases are growing quite rapidly. media is treating it like a STD that affects gay men only, which is fake news.
chinese CDC had a guidance that basically said the same thing and that the idea that its an STD is incredibly overblown. their guidance was to avoid prolonged contact with untested port workers, dont try new clothes on at big stores in port cities, and wear masks. but they said no one had tested positive for it yet in china probably because of their strict covid controls.
This thread on Monkeypox / Smallpox makes for a fun Russia conspiracy brained thought experiment. Regardless of the Russia conspiracy stuff, it’s seems that the way that the west has fumbled the Monkeypox response has completely fucked Smallpox surveillance.

STD means "mostly transmitted through sperm or vaginal fluids", and there's no sign that this applies to monkey pox at all. people have been infected during sex parties, namely one on the canary islands, which is a hugely popular holiday destination for Europe's gay scene, but these transmissions could have happened entirely through close physical contact, or maybe even through infected beddings at hotels or w/e.
it's not only stigmatizing when people view this as "another gay disease", it is downright dangerous for the population at large. it creates the mistaken assumption that you need to fuck other dudes to catch this shit and that you're safe if you don't, both of which are provably false.
