That's been one of the goals of the movement since at least the Bush era. In fact I think there may have been a ban on stem cell research during the Bush era (or at least a lack of federal funding).
There was a federal funding ban on stem cell research during the Bush era. Even though the stem cells used in research institutions were harvested from things like umbilical cords and are already self-replicating(daughter cells), obviating the need to collect more, Bush and his cronies spread the message far and wide that stem cells were all aborted baby parts. This set the field back decades.
Is there an economic reason anyone would want to hurt stem cell research or medicine? I am not particularly well read on the topic but that strikes me as something that would step on the toes of some billionaires that might be heavily into areas of medicine that would be affected by it?
