All the major tire companies used to be headquartered there, it's where a lot of the A-4 Corsairs were built during WWII, it was the site of the first general convention of the SDS, and where Sojourner Truth gave her famous "Ain't I a Woman" speech.
Ohio gets a lot of shit for being a bleak blob of generic "American" quintessence, but it used to be basically California before California existed. Lots of historical figures and a huge economic engine.
Incidentally, Akron also produced DEVO. It takes a special kind of life experience in the American purgatory to take the piss out of America so well.
