Every move the US makes seems like a desperate attempt to maintain power, using the threat of mutual nuclear annihilation as a hail mary. The only explanation I can think of besides that they are entirely selfish psychopaths and narcissists at the end of their lives is that they also know there is only like 10 years left before climate change kills off most of humanity anyway, so they really just don't give a shit.
