@Nakoichi commented a while back something along the lines of how grocery stores in Amerika don’t exist to provide food, they exist to financially gatekeep the hungry from getting food.
I think about that every time I got into a grocery store now.
Imagine grocery stores with no prices. You just walk in, get what you need, and walk out. Or maybe restaurant-cafeterias would be commonplace. In this system, even if someone was taking a disproportionate amount of food and wasting it, hoarding it, this would be addressed not by putting this person in a cage, but by figuring out why they were doing this and giving them help. If it becomes enough a problem, you can ration per individual. Food pantries already do this and it works fine, even within a capitalist society. The people who would be labeled thieves were not the ones taking the amount the nee for sustenance. It would be those conspiring to create scarcity out of abundance and use it to create power for themselves over others. And for that system to be stable, those thieves would need to be dealt with swiftly and effectively
