      Settlers didn't raise pigs in a sty like we think of hog farming today. Pigs are more than capable of fending for themselves (see: 50 feral hogs meme) so they'd bring a bunch with them and let them loose, then hunt them down after a few months when the pigs had fattened themselves up and turn em into salt pork, either for trade or for the winter.
