Knights of the Old Republic was so good because it had no connection to the Skywalkers. You actually met and interacted with different people throughout the galaxy.
Disney announced something called "The High Republic" which seemed like it was going to be their attempt to do KOTOR without having to pay royalties to anyone who was involved with KOTOR.
