Watch the original pilot "The Gathering" and if you're really struggling with season 1, there are some guides that tell you which episodes to watch (a lot are standalone, skippable ones). You may miss Londo at his most likeable.
It suffers from "Riker's beard" syndrome in the extreme that the first season is just terrible but the rest of it is just fantastic, on par with the best of DS9.

I don't think I've ever watched Babylon 5 aside from a few episodes when it originally aired.

Also JMS, the creator of B5, alleges that he took his "show bible" to Paramount, they passed, and then DS9 had a few very similar plot points.
