      Yeah, I saw my first one in the back yard a few years ago when I was living with my mom, and I was shocked at how big it was. It was almost two feet tall and you could see it clearly from 50 yards away.

    After looking up the sex differences in these birds, I realized this is a female pileated woodpecker. Males have larger crests and red streaks on their cheeks.
