    I think Brandon is simply stuck in a situation where the interests of the party elite differ significantly from party voters, and he’s trying to bridge that gap at least a little to hold the party together.

    Republican elites can basically do whatever they want for economic policy since their base is trained to care more about culture war issues (shifting the focus to minority groups is a classic fascist tactic, after all).

    The Dem base, on the other hand, cares much more about economic issues and this conflicts with the class interests of those who actually control the party, which makes it a bit more difficult for Dem politicians to suck up to the party elites AND have any kind of actual popularity with voters.

      i've been saying for years that neoliberal identity politics creating more uniform mixes of race/gender in each class strata would eventually lead to more class consciousness as the ability to divide by race/gender/etc is lessened. similar to how social democratic politics is easier in more homogeneous european countries.
