I mean blatantly cheating in pro competition is almost always bad.

The beads in the ass stuff is homophobic bs from :reddit-logo: as far as I can tell.

I mean, I don't really believe Nieman put something in his ass to beat Magnus.

That being said, look at the all the stuff athletes put in their body to win competitions. There are definitely people out there that would put some kind of device in their ass to get an edge over their competitors.

It started out as a joke.

Chess shitposters think writing gay fanfics about Super GMs is the height of comedy.

“Journalists” :not-a-journalist: who trawl high engagement social media posts for click bait and do no subsequent research did not realise this, or did but didn’t care it wasn’t true because it made more sensational headlines and reported it as fact.

There is no evidence Niemann has ever cheated in over the board chess.

In the game Niemann beat Carlsen with Black, Niemann played slightly above his usual performance rating, but in no way suspiciously so. Carlsen played very poorly, his play was further below his usual level than Niemann’s was above his.

After the game, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament (a huge taboo in competitive chess, unless you’re sick or a family member is dying) and extra anti-cheating measures were put in place, leading most people to believe the reason Carlsen had given the tournament directors for his withdrawal was that he thought Niemann was cheating.

In a postgame interview, Niemann was a mess. Becoming one of half a dozen people to ever beat the world champion with black then being publically accused of cheating will do that to a 19 year old.

Niemann said he won because Magnus had fallen into a line he had prepared, specially against him, despite Magnus never having played that opening before.

In chess, Super Grandmasters don’t compete alone. They have whole teams of other Grandmasters whose full time job is helping them train, research new lines and prepare specifically for each of their games. This preparation is at least half the battle in high level chess and is very secretive and cloak and dagger. While Magnus has never played the line Niemann claimed he prepared against him, Magnus’s second (a senior member of his team) has recently been playing a lot of it online. It’s likely Niemann’s team noticed this, assumed (correctly it turns out) this was a line that was being prepped for Magnus, and prepared a counter line for Niemann, which, by a stroke of good luck, he was able to use against Magnus on a day Niemann was playing well and Magnus was playing very poorly. Usually, other than generally thanking their team or saying “this was a line I prepared earlier based on these games”, super grandmasters never reveal the details of how their team prepares, out of fear it will give their opponents an advantage. If Carlsen’s team knew Niemann’s team was prepping based on his seconds online games, for example, they could have purposefully played several online games in a line Carlsen had secretly prepared a nasty departure from.

Muddying the waters further, Carlsen is not just a chess grandmaster, he is a businessman and a brand. Carlsen’s brand is currently undergoing a merger with Chess.com, the largest online for profit chess website. Carlsen’s loss with black to a junior, and subsequent immaturity could be very damaging to his brand. As a child, (which isn’t long ago given, again he’s 19) Niemann did cheat on Chess.com. Immediately after the match and Carlsen’s withdrawal from the tournament, Chess.com publically banned Niemann from their platform and Chess.com affiliated influences have been very loudly calling Niemann a cheater.
