I mean blatantly cheating in pro competition is almost always bad.

The beads in the ass stuff is homophobic bs from :reddit-logo: as far as I can tell.

I mean, I don't really believe Nieman put something in his ass to beat Magnus.

That being said, look at the all the stuff athletes put in their body to win competitions. There are definitely people out there that would put some kind of device in their ass to get an edge over their competitors.

It started out as a joke.

Chess shitposters think writing gay fanfics about Super GMs is the height of comedy.

“Journalists” :not-a-journalist: who trawl high engagement social media posts for click bait and do no subsequent research did not realise this, or did but didn’t care it wasn’t true because it made more sensational headlines and reported it as fact.

There is no evidence Niemann has ever cheated in over the board chess.

In the game Niemann beat Carlsen with Black, Niemann played slightly above his usual performance rating, but in no way suspiciously so. Carlsen played very poorly, his play was further below his usual level than Niemann’s was above his.

After the game, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament (a huge taboo in competitive chess, unless you’re sick or a family member is dying) and extra anti-cheating measures were put in place, leading most people to believe the reason Carlsen had given the tournament directors for his withdrawal was that he thought Niemann was cheating.

In a postgame interview, Niemann was a mess. Becoming one of half a dozen people to ever beat the world champion with black then being publically accused of cheating will do that to a 19 year old.

Niemann said he won because Magnus had fallen into a line he had prepared, specially against him, despite Magnus never having played that opening before.

In chess, Super Grandmasters don’t compete alone. They have whole teams of other Grandmasters whose full time job is helping them train, research new lines and prepare specifically for each of their games. This preparation is at least half the battle in high level chess and is very secretive and cloak and dagger. While Magnus has never played the line Niemann claimed he prepared against him, Magnus’s second (a senior member of his team) has recently been playing a lot of it online. It’s likely Niemann’s team noticed this, assumed (correctly it turns out) this was a line that was being prepped for Magnus, and prepared a counter line for Niemann, which, by a stroke of good luck, he was able to use against Magnus on a day Niemann was playing well and Magnus was playing very poorly. Usually, other than generally thanking their team or saying “this was a line I prepared earlier based on these games”, super grandmasters never reveal the details of how their team prepares, out of fear it will give their opponents an advantage. If Carlsen’s team knew Niemann’s team was prepping based on his seconds online games, for example, they could have purposefully played several online games in a line Carlsen had secretly prepared a nasty departure from.

Muddying the waters further, Carlsen is not just a chess grandmaster, he is a businessman and a brand. Carlsen’s brand is currently undergoing a merger with Chess.com, the largest online for profit chess website. Carlsen’s loss with black to a junior, and subsequent immaturity could be very damaging to his brand. As a child, (which isn’t long ago given, again he’s 19) Niemann did cheat on Chess.com. Immediately after the match and Carlsen’s withdrawal from the tournament, Chess.com publically banned Niemann from their platform and Chess.com affiliated influences have been very loudly calling Niemann a cheater.

lol no. What is this shit bait. Someone from r/chess found this site or what?

For those who are not up to date:

1- Magnus quit the tournament after losing to Hans, badly. People are shocked because this is the first time he does something so drastic.

2- Magnus posts a tweet which says nothing but an insinuation he "can't say anything".

3- Many people but primarily a couple of other GMs(mainly Hikaru because grifting streamer) start speculating it is because Magnus suspected Hans cheated. Many conspiracies by fans and social media including WIFI morse code dildo.

4- Hans gives bad interview that makes people realy sus.

5- Turns out it becomes known he cheated when he was 12 and 16 online on Chess.com. It is also known that other GMs knew and/or suspected this including Nepo, Firouzja, So and obviously Hikaru.

6- Hans gives another :heartbreaking: interview denying everything making a personal appeal to his character. Hans admits cheating twice on Chess.com but says this was an honest mistake. Yeah right.

7- People start flipping into supporting Hans side based on that interview alone.

8- Chess.com management comes out with a bombshell pretty much saying Hans lied about his cheating, he cheated far more than that and they basicaly double down on justifying their ban. They said they gave Hans all the details. The ball is on his court.

9- So far Hans says nothing. People immidiately flop back into bashing Hans lol.

10- Tournament arbiter says no evidence of cheating that they could find.

11- Some other GM says Magnus already knew Hans had a history of cheating before this tournament.

You notice through all this Magnus has said literaly nothing other than the original tweet. Hans may be innocent this time but this is not a hill for anyone to die over. All the evidence is he is among the vast number of online cheaters. He would already be banned in most other e-sports imo.

Hans is, afaik, just another top level chess player. Not as good as the top echelon but could of course absolutely destroy any of us.

And not an online tournament, it was irl/"over the board", which is why the cheating allegations are wild because that would be much more difficult. Much more likely imo, if he cheated at all, was that he somehow got access to Magnus' prep before the game and studied it.

        Chess shit is wild

What would you consider to be "the top echelon"? Hans is considered to be a Super GM. He's within the top 50 players in the world.

Yes and no. Chess.com has a monopoly on online chess and cheating there is a big deal. However it is also kind of common place. IRL tournaments are not bound by the same online rules, even though it should be honestly, like all e-sports. Chess is outdated in this area.

This incident though was about an IRL tournament, and Hans online cheating reputation(and now proven history) served as a pretty big catalyst for all of these allegations. But since both are handled separately by different entities nothing will come out of it.

And yes even though he most likely didn't cheat in this IRL tournament.

I mean the guy he lost to has cheated before and is very inconsistent so it's not like the cheating accusations are without merit

i really don't understand how cheating online has much bearing on this at all. cheating online is trivially easy, cheating over the board would require a heck of a lot of leg work and intentionality. plus the guy was what, 13? are there kids at 13 who have never cheated or lied or something? hardly inculpatory.

I mean he cheated when he was 12 and 16, and now he's 19.

The cheating accusations, at least the serious ones anyway, are about his opponents/ Carlson's prep being leaked as Carlson used an opening he never has before, not cheating live with signals or communication from the outside

well, it appears he's being hanged/condemned for the non-serious accusations then lol.

if the concern really is that he got Carlsen's prep a head of time, okay, maybe so, but then what? do people expect Hans to go out every night and steal opponents chessbase laptops to get an edge? will broadcasting w/ tape delays, or additional security pat downs at the event, prevent this? come on.

It's not like it is realistically possible to prove that he cheated in that particular game. Carlson knows this and this is why he hasn't openly accused him of cheating. Players and spectators can only look at other data points like past cheating and compare his play to engine lines.

The same thing has happened countless times in CS:GO. There are a ridiculous number of suspicious looking clips from some players and they won't even bother to come up with believable explanations since they know past cheating allegations are impossible to prove.

Is this a joke or did he actually say or do something? All I've seen and heard is that he's a Social Democrat. Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up being a chud though. Chess has been full of crypto bullshit for a while with players constantly pushing it.
