      Sort of? Like there were italian trading colonies which have some analogy to capitalist colonial structures, but the states of outremer quickly became more organic entities. Like we have to be careful not to back project capitalist modes of thought into precapitalist societies. Like I am not making apologetics for the crusades, they were brutal wars of religion, ultimately completely pointless violence, but the perspective of them as a early form of European colonialism is actually a European cultural creation and post hoc conquest justifying export to the world, not an actual representation of the history itself.
