I agree, but Merle later said that he regrets writing it and Okie from Muskogee and that the government was brainwashing everyone to hate the hippies and marijuana. He actually wanted to follow up with a song in support of interracial marriage but his producers wouldn't let him. Also I mostly like him for songs about being a ne'erdowell drifter.

Yeah, he did write some real right wing schlock though.
